For more than two decades, Lake House has been a standard-setter for country hospitality, its menu bursting with seasonal, local produce cooked with skill and flair. An outstanding wine list is presented with equal aplomb and polish.

The dining room with its views over the lake and treetops is as homely as ever, so its a pleasure to settle in for a leisurely meal, starting with the charcuterie plate - a generous spread of duck liver parfait, remoulade and rillettes, chunky terrine, local prosciutto and salumi. A tempered-fried nori roll encasing quail meat served with pickled daikon is more refined.

Autumn dining usually minas a celebration of fungi: barley risotto is heady with wild mushrooms, as is an accompanying consommé. Dessert such as giber poached pear with gingerbread and honey flavoured ice cream are exquisite in any season.
