Check In - With its peaceful lakeside setting and award winning restaurant, Daylesford\'s Lake House has long been a destination for foodies seeking a relaxing break. And now, with new rock star accommodation The Retreat, it truly is the ultimate weekend getaway.
Making an Entrance
It\'s always a relief pulling into the car park of Lake House, knowing you\'ll shortly be in the capable hands of Alla Wolf Tasker and her team. Flight delays, car hire issues and work stress are quickly soothed away as you breathe in the fresh country air on the terrace, chilled aperitif in hand.
Lake House\'s ambiences isn\'t about the wow factor (Its charm is more subtle then pervasive), but the new Atrium and Spa Villa\'s that make up The Retreat, certainly ramp the indulgence levels up a notch. This secluded house within the property\'s grounds is a luxe choice for anniversary or celebration.
What are the rooms like?
The Retreat can cater for up to four guests, with 2 lavish bathrooms that feature heated floors and deep baths, a full kitchen with Nespresso machine and wine fridge, and spacious lounge room. There are generous private decks, and outdoor spa and a Tuscan inspired courtyard with fire pit and water feature. With interiors that wouldn\'t look out of place in a glossy magazine and state-of-the-art amenities including a BOSE sounds system and free wifi, the chic styling also extends to quirky touches, such as the gorgeous Oly bird chandelier brought over from San Fransisco.
What\'s the food like?
Renowned as one of the communities best, Lake House\'s restaurant follows the seasons and Alla\'s commitment to developing personal relationships with suppliers is clearly evident on the menu - often produce is hand-picked for the mornings delivery. In Spring, you\'ll see dishes such as lamb with asparagus and morels, while breads and charcuteries are made in-house. Despite this local, authentic approach, there\'s a cutting edge to the accomplished cooking that\'s matched with an impressive international wine list. Meanwhile, the breakfast buffet includes seasonal fruit compotes, house made jams and a delicious tomato relish. Kids will enjoy feeing the resident kookaburra family that perches on the garden fence.
Alla has been instrumental in developing and promoting the Daylesford Macedon ranged region and its website (dmproduce.com.au) details all of the cellar doors and farm gates that you can visit. Daylesford offers many good restaurants, pubs, bars and cafes while the nearby Hepburn Springs offers treatments at the redeveloped Bathhouse.
If you\'re staying at The Retreat, expect your private butler to arrive at cocktail hour to fix you drinks, before you wander down to the restaurant to enjoy and indulgent dinner (nothing a brisk walk around the lake the following morning won\'t work off!)
